With the staggering twist of fate in the men’s draw at the US Open, the ATP Barclays World Tour Finals this year are set to be the most competitive in recent memory, as eight players still have a chance of booking the last remaining slots in the round robin championship. The tournament already revealed that the first three spots in the tournament have been claimed by the world’s top 3 players Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, while the remaining spots are still open for grabs. Atop that list is Stan Wawrinka, who triggered the remarkable year of upsets on the Grand Slam stage when he won his maiden title at the Australian Open against Nadal. He would go on to win the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, which places him in the No. 4 spot and next in line to qualify for the event. Closely behind the Swiss No. 2 is fellow maiden Grand Slam winner Marin Cilic, who produced one of the biggest upsets in US Open history when he defeated five-time champion Roger Federer in straight sets before advancing to win the title in straight sets two days later. Cilic moved up 8 places to No. 5 in the qualification list and is closer than ever to making his debut at the year-end championships. Fellow finalist Kei Nishikori greatly increased his chances of qualifying for the tournament when he became the first Asian male to reach the final of a Grand Slam event. He moved to No. 6 in the list, which is a large boost considering he missed both Toronto and Cincinnati with a toe cyst that required surgery. Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer, who hold the final two spots currently in the Top 8 qualification spots, follow him closely. To add to the excitement, British No. 1 Andy Murray, Milos Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov are all within 400 points of each other. Check out the ‘Race to London’ standings below: 1.
