Iveta Melzer, the former world No. 25 and wife of Jürgen Melzer in 2012, has announced her retirement from professional competition. Melzer announced the news with a statement on her official Facebook page. “So this is the end of my journey as a professional tennis player. This wasn’t an easy decision because tennis has been my life since I was a little girl, but it’s about the right time. I feel it in my heart. Being out for over a year and still facing continuous shoulder problems has not been easy for me, so this thought has been on my mind for some time. The truth is also that after so many years on tour, it is hard for me to find the determination or desire to make tennis my number one priority in life. “So deep down inside me I know that this is the right time for me to move on.” Melzer, who reached a career-high ranking of world No. 25, won two WTA titles, the first in Acapulco in 2004 and the second in Fès in 2010. She had a more illustrious run as a doubles player, where she won 14 WTA titles with a variety of partners. Her continous shoulder problems would derail her career in 2012 and it would never fully recover from there. Here is hoping she enjoys her retirement.
