Serena Williams vs Samantha Stosur Preview – WTA Cincinnati 2014 Round 2

Serena Williams

Australia’s Samantha Stosur set up her second clash in as many weeks with world No. 1 Serena Williams, and considering her lackluster performance against the top seed last week in Quebec, it is certainly not the most convenient draw for the former Grand Slam winner. The Williams vs Stosur Head to Head is poised at 7-3 with Sam not having defeated Williams since winning her only Major title at the 2011 US Open.

Following her bizarre retirement from doubles competition at the Wimbledon Championships, top seed Serena Williams began her North American hard court swing with the necessary momentum shift. The American comfortably worked her way through the Stanford draw several weeks ago, picking up wins over the likes of Ana Ivanovic, Andrea Petkovic and Angelique Kerber in the final to secure the title. After arriving in Montreal a few days later, Williams appeared to off to another deep run in the tournament after wins over her upcoming opponent Samantha Stosur, Lucie Safarova and Caroline Wozniacki before losing to her sister Venus for the first time in over five years.

While Williams was not happy with her performance, she did have this to say:

“In a way I don’t feel like, you know, a ton of pressure going into the Open. I almost feel like it’s lifted. I look forward to next year because I don’t have any ranking points to defend at any of the slams.”

After losing to Williams in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Australian No. 1 Samantha Stosur will have to summon up the strength to contest yet another second round match-up against the American, this time in Cincinnati, Ohio. Stosur defeated Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 7-5 to set up the Wednesday encounter.

This marks the eleventh time that these two competitors will meet on the WTA tour, with Williams leading the series 7-3. The American is also 6-2 on hard court matches and has not lost to Stosur since the 2011 US Open final. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, this should be a relatively straightforward match for Williams, particularly following her dominant performance against the Australian last week.
