Wozniacki beats Robson in 1st round of Roland Garros and breaks losing streak

Danish 10th seed Caroline Wozniacki, who lost in her first match of her last three tournaments (in Madrid, Rome and Brussels), played against the British number one, 37th ranked leftie Laura Robson, on Suzanne Lenglen court on Monday afternoon. The Dane went up 3-0 before Robson got two games in a row for 2-3, but Wozniacki went on to lead 5-2 with the Brit serving to stay in the set. She held for 3-5 before Wozniacki served out the set at 6-3. Robson began the second set and held, but Wozniacki broke to lead 2-1 and then 4-1 before Robson got another game. Wozniacki got to 5-2 with her serve to come and she made no mistake in serving out the set 6-2.

In a match between two hard hitting Germans, 8th seed Angelique Kerber, a quarter finalist last year, took on Mona Barthel, ranked at 35. The first set went to a tie breaker and Barthel held two set points at 6-4, but the higher ranked German won the next four points to take the set 8-6. Kerber started the second set and got two early breaks to lead 4-1, but Barthel held to trail 2-4. Kerber held for 5-2 and got a final break to take the set 6-2.

Two Russians played on Court 6 – 22nd seed Ekaterina Makarova and 39th ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova, who was this slam’s champion in 2009. Kuznetsova was the first to 5-4 and broke her opponent to take the first set 6-4. She started the second set and built 2-0 and 4-1 leads before breaking yet again to wrap up the set 6-2.
