Philipp Kohlschreiber enters second round in Rome after upsetting Milos Raonic. Marin Cilic and Denis Istomin also advance.
After losing openers in Munich and Madrid, eleventh seed Cilic made it to the second round in Rome by eliminating 195th-ranked Kazakh player Andrey Golubev in straight sets. He broke his opponent in the first game of the match and served out the set after defending a couple of re-break balls. The Croat opened the second set with a four straight games run to put the outcome of the clash beyond any doubt. In the end, he progressed with a routine 6-4, 6-2 victory. He is meeting South African Kevin Anderson next.
In a battle of unseeded players Uzbek Istomin turned around the match against John Isner. The first set went with serve until the twelfth game when the American produced the very first break point and converted it to capture the set. The second one was even more equal as the players could not be separated before the tie-break – Isner did not come close to sealing the match and his rival eventually managed to stretch him to the three sets. In the decider the US player suffered his first loss of serve, allowing the Uzbek to move 3-0 ahead and to convert his third match ball after two hours and twelve minutes of play. The result: 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Istomin will challenge Tomay Berdych in next round.
Fourteenth-seeded Canadian Raonic was stunned by recent Munich finalist Kohlschreiber in first round. The serves were never under a threat in the opening set which thus ended in a tie-break – Raonic conceded four mini-breaks before the German clinched the opener with a set ball number one. Kohlshreiber then seized a crucial break in the seventh game of the second set to cross the finish line first and book his second round Rome ticket with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory. He will take on Albert Ramos next.
In an all-Italian clash Fabio Fognini outclassed Andreas Seppi with 6-4, 6-1. His next opponent is the Spanish matador Nadal.
