David Ferrer entered the quarter-finals at Estoril 2013 in three sets, while Victor Hanescu eliminated sixth-seeded Paire. Fabio Fognini also won in second round.
Top seed Ferrer did not excel during his first appearance at Portugal Open 2013 in Estoril, yet he managed to complete his victory in three sets and almost two hours of play. No break points were gifted in the opener until 5-4 when Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin was serving to stay in the set. The Spaniard eventually created a set ball and converted it for a one set lead. In the second set both players had problems holding their serves with the unseeded Frenchman seizing his third one to go 5-4 up and leveling the score after the next game. The decider resembled the opening set – the top seed took advantage of the only break ball which was enough to advance to the last 8. End result: 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Unseeded Romanian Hanescu got the better of seed number six Benoit Paire of France. Hanescu pulled off a comeback in the second set and was the only one to break an opponent’s serve in the set number two. He progressed with 7-6 (2), 6-4 to set up a quarterfinal clash against Ferrer.
Fourth-seeded Fognini overcame his countryman Paolo Lorenzi in three sets as well. The second best ranked Italian clinched the first set tie-break, yet his unseeded rival leveled the terms after turning around the second set. In the final set Fognini claimed a crucial break at 4-4 and made his way into the QFs after holding to love next. The score: 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-4.
Fognini will square off against surprise quarterfinalist Pablo Carrerno-Bautista, ranked 228th. The latter was outclassed in the first set against Belgian David Goffin, yet he got back into the match to win it with 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
