Fabio Fognini pulled off a massive shock in his third round match at the Monte Carlo Masters, defeating Tomas Berdych in straight sets 6-4 6-2. Despite a relatively poor performance by his standards yesterday in defeating Marcel Granollers, it was still surprising to see Berdych dealt with so easily. While an early break was recovered by Berdych, he never looked comfortable on serving, giving up break point opportunities in all but one service game in the first set. It would be at 4-4 that Fognini struck the decisive blow, converting on the second break point chance after creating a 0-40 opening before serving out the set to love.

After failing to convert four break points early on in the second, Fognini would punish the Czech for his wastefulness by taking the first break of the set for a 3-2 lead, converting after saving several Berdych game points. A second break would give Fognini a nice cushion to serve out the match with but he served it out at the first time of asking to complete the well deserved win.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ensured the presence of a second Frenchman in the quarter finals with a straight sets victory over Jurgen Melzer. He was never in trouble during the 6-3 6-0 victory, dropping just three points on first serve and facing no break points. The first set was fairly close with a lone break at 2-1* deciding matters for Tsonga. It was totally different in the second though, with the Tsonga completely dominant. Melzer didn’t see a single game point as he was broken three times in getting a bagel, winning just nine points in total. Tsonga should expect things to be a bit more difficult in the next round, where he takes on Stainslas Wawrinka.
