Novak Djokovic turned around his second round match at Monte Carlo Rolex Masters 2013, whilst Jurgen Melzer entered third round after his triumph against Almagro.
Top seed Djokovic probably expected an easier job in second round of Monte Carlo as he found himself one set down, yet he managed to overcome resilient Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the end. It was a nightmare start for the time Monte Carlo finalist Serb – he lost the opening four games and was unable to annul the unseeded Russian’s double break lead later in the set. Nole thus broke his opponent to love in the eighth game to make it 5-3, but Youzhny held his nerves and served out the set two games later. Djokovic then raised the level of his game in the second set and went on a five straight games run after 1-1 to level the terms. The decider was much more competitive with Youzhny breaking back by 3-3, yet Djokovic did just enough to grab a ninth-game break and confirm it to progress to the last sixteen with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win. His next challenger will be seed number fourteen Juan Monaco.
Unlike Djokovic, tenth-seed Nicolas Almagro failed to escape a second round scare and was sent home by unseeded Austrian Melzer. The latter was always one step ahead of his rival as he seized a third-game break in the opener, while holding all of his serves to wrap the first set up forty-two minutes into the match. The set number two has proved to be even more one-sided with the World. no. 36 Austrian acquiring a two-break cushion by 5-1 and creating his first match point in the follow-up game. Almagro got out of trouble this time, but could do nothing to prevent Melzer completing his convincing 6-4, 6-2 victory soon after that. The Austrian will take on sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next round.
