Top seed Novak Djokovic cruised to the fourth round of Miami Masters 2103 where he will face Tommy Haas. David Ferrer also advanced to the last 16.
In the top half of the draw reigning champion Djokovic humbled 254th-ranked Indian Somdev Devvarman easily enough in two sets and has come a step closer to obtaining his third consecutive Sony Open Tennis title, the fourth one in total. The players had not squared off against each other on ATP courts prior to their last 32 Miami Masters clash.
The top seed’s intentions were clear from the game one on as he broke Devvarman straight away. The Indian could not cause any upsets later on and the Serb added a love break to make it 5-2. He served out the opener with the second set ball after his rival’s forehand sailed just a bit long. A solid if unspectacular display by the top-ranked player in the set number two where he pulled off a break to love at 2-2 and consolidated it in the same fashion. Devvarman then produced a re-break ball at 5-4, yet he was denied by Nole who acquired an advantage and celebrate a 6-2, 6-4 victory after forcing a return error from his opponent. He ended the match by winning 90% of first serve points (28/31).
15th-seeded German veteran Haas seems to be ageing like a fine wine as he put in another inspiring performance to dispatch his ten years younger Ukrainian rival Alexandr Dolgopolov, seed 19. Incidentally, Haas was broken in the opening game of the match and saved another couple of break balls to prevent a second consecutive loss of serve, but all of the pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place for the German who efficiently converted both of his two break point opportunities to get his nose in front by 4-2. He served out the first set calmly and added an insult to Dolgopolov’s injury by taking his serve in the beginning of the set number two. The Ukrainian could not take advantage of a 0-40* lead in the sixth game and suffered another loss of serve in the follow-up game instead. Haas now had the honor to wrap up the match and he did it in style with a hold to love. The 34-year-old German triumphed with a 6-3, 6-2 final result, fending off seven out of eight break balls and hitting 13 aces (Dolgopolov 4) in the process. He will challenge the best player in the world in fourth round.
Seed number three Ferrer moved past 32nd-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini in straight sets as well and is now leading the head-to-head series 6-0. The Spaniard faced only one break ball threat during the clash, while he converted four of them himself. Ferrer took the opening set in twenty-five minutes thanks to gaining a couple of breaks. He was confronted with more resistance in the following set with the Italian – who is yet to obtain his first ATP title – not letting him confirm the fifth-game break, yet he waited patiently for the second one which enabled him to serve for the match at 6-5. He booked his last 16 spot with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph after converting the match ball number two. Ferrer will meet 13th-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan next.
