Andy Murray advanced in three sets, whilst Juan Martin Del Potro and Carlos Berloq are also through to the third round of Indian Wells 2013.
Third-seeded Murray did not excel in the opening set of his second round clash against 83rd-ranked Russian Evgeny Donskoy. He was surprisingly broken two times by 5-1, he then managed to annul the Russian’s lead, yet he dropped another service game at the end of the set which thus went Donskoy’s way. The Olympic champion recuperated quickly enough to prevent any more scares – his serve remained intact for the rest of the match, while he achieved a double break lead in each of the following sets. In the end, Murray earned his third round ticket with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 triumph after two hours and eighteen minutes long battle. He will play unseeded Taiwanese Yen-Hsun Lu next.
Seed number seven Del Potro got off to a slow start in each of the two sets he played against Russian Nikolay Davydenko, yet he bounced back effectively both times to escape an early Indian Wells exit. He lost his opening service game in the first set, but he was back in the driver’s seat at 5-3 and he served out the opener next. In the second set Delpo was trailing 3-0, yet the history of the first set repeated itself and he ultimately claimed victory with his first match point. End score: 6-3, 6-4. Del Potro will confront German veteran Bjorn Phau in third round.
30-year-old Argentine Berloq upset 22nd-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine. Berloq seized the opener, while his seeded opponent leveled the terms after the second set tie-break. Dolgopolov acquired a one break advantage early in the decider, yet there was enough fuel left in the Argentine’s tank to turn the set around and progress with a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 final result. He will take on 16th-seed Kei Nishikori in round of 32.
