Round 2 of the Aegon GB Pro-Series at the Welsh National Tennis Centre in Cardiff saw Great Britain dominate proceedings. Seven of eight quarterfinal berths went to players from the UK, with the final slot taken by Denmark’s Frederik Nielsen.
Nielsen had a comfortable 6-2 6-2 win over Nicolas Rosenzweig of France, and there were further two set victories for Jack Findel-Hawkins, Alexander Ward, Richard Gabb and Tom Farquharson, all from Great Britain.
The remaining matches were much closer. James Marsalek (GBR) took a one set lead over Lewis Burton (GBR) only to be overturned 4-6 6-3 6-4. In the afternoon session Jack Carpenter (GBR) faced down a spirited second set comeback from Chris Lewis (GBR) in a skillful contest that ended 6-4 3-6 6-4.
Earlier in the day Edward Corrie (GBR) and Davy Sum of France played out a bruising encounter, filled with fast and powerful play from the baseline. Each player put pressure on the other’s serve and chased down every ball, but it was Corrie, who eventually overcame his rival in just over two hours by a score of 3-6 7-5 6-3.
The Aegon GB Pro-Series continues tomorrow with the men’s quarterfinals beginning at 10.
