Top seed Novak Djokovic and second seed Roger Federer advanced into the second round of Dubai, whilst Tipsarevic stumbled against Nikolay Davydenko.

Three-time Dubai Tennis Championship winner (from 2009 to 2011) and last month’s Australian Open champion Djokovic faced his fellow Serbian Viktor Troicki in first round. The top seed was leading H2H series 12-1 and got stronger into this match as well, winning the first three games. He extended his one break lead by 5-1 and served the opener out with a love game. 44th-ranked Troicki was broken again early in the second set, yet he managed to peg back by 4-4. However, he gave away another serve in the next game, allowing World No. 1 to wrap up the proceedings. Djokovic advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 straight set victory.

Defending champ and five-time Dubai title holder Federer needed one set to warm his engines and ultimately overcome Tunisian Malek Jaziri. The latter held all of his first set serves, converted the one break point opportunity he had in the opener at 5-5 and went one nil up one game later. The Swiss Maestro managed to regroup and came out a different player in the set number two – he left his opponent absolutely no breathing space and bageled him in twenty-four minutes. The decider was a contest until 2-2 when FedEx stepped it up a notch again to send Jaziri home with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 final result.

Sixth seed Serb Janko Tipsarevic failed to enter the next round as he was stopped by Russian Davydenko. The spectators saw a most unusual start of the match with Tipsarevic wasting seven break points in the opening game, which was followed by the Russian converting his sixth break ball in the game number two. The Serb could not recover from the shock and dropped another couple of serves, receiving a bagel in the end. Despite playing only six games, the players spent 51 minutes on the court in the first set. Tipsarevic was on a right track in the following set as he acquired a two break lead by 4-1. However, 46th-ranked Davydenko pulled off an impressive comeback by breaking his adversary three times to progress into the second round with a 6-0, 7-5 triumph. The second set was only slightly longer than the previous one. Tipsarevic conceded 6 double faults, had a 49% first serve percentage and faced seventeen break points during the match.
