Bernard Tomic moved into the quarter finals in Marseille after a straight sets win over Somdev Devvarman. The 6-3 7-5 win was much more straight forward than his opener against Martin Klizan, where he saved match point before going on to victory.  Tomic began well, breaking in his first service game and going 40-0 up on Devvarman’s serve in the next one only for the Indian to hold. Devvarman would have a 0-40 of his own but would also fail to convert although he would break next time round to tie the set up at 3-3. Tomic recovered and would instantly break back on his way to winning the last three games to take the set.

After breaking for a 4-2 lead in the second, the match looked all but over only for Tomic to throw in another poor service game when trying to serve out the match. After the Australian held for a 6-5 lead, Devvarman served to force a tie break but would be unable to do so as he was broken for the fifth time in the match.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga served 9 aces on his way to victory in a comfortable 7-6(1) 6-3 victory over Nikolay Davydenko. After losing in the opener in Rotterdam, Tsonga was keen to avoid another shock here and dominated on serve. He lost just four points on his first serve and faced no break points. With neither player being even remotely troubled on serve in the first set, a tie break would be needed to settle it. Tsonga dropped his serve on the first point only to reel off seven straight points in an excellent display.

Just one poor game from Davydenko in the second set would be enough to put Tsonga in complete control, with the Frenchman breaking to love at 2-2. Davydenko would have to serve to stay in the match at 3-5 but failed to do so, getting broken for the third time in the match.
