Nadal beats Chardy to reach Vina del Mar final

Rafael Nadal booked his place in the ATP Vina del Mar 2013 final after beating Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-2 6-2.

The top seeded Spaniard started the encounter on a high note, breaking Chardy in the opening game of the first set. Despite Nadal commiting three double faults in the following game, he eventually managed to hold for a 2-0 lead just before taking the Frenchman’s serve for the second time in today’s semi-final encounter. Chardy had to wait until the fifth game to finally get on the scoreboard after coming up with three aces to wrap up the game. However, Nadal’s crushing ground strokes did the damage and there was absolutely nothing the Frenchman could do to stop the ‘king of clay courts’ from taking a one set lead in the match.

Nadal carried the momentum into the second set as he broke his opponent for the third time to go 2-1 up. Chardy earned himself a huge opportunity to break back in game six as he got to three break points at 40-0 up on Rafa’s serve, but the Spaniard managed to save all of them, holding for a 4-2 lead. After just a couple more games, the 7 time Roland Garros champion advanced to this year’s tournament final, where he will face the Argentine Horacio Zeballos, who overcame fellow countryman Carlos Berlocq also in straight sets 6-3 7-6 (4).
