Agnieszka Radwanska continued her perfect start to the year on Thursday, when she made it into the final of the Sydney Apia International, after having won her first tournament of the 2013 season in Auckland. Her semi final opponent was Na Li, the tournament’s 4th seed, who had also won her first tournament in Shenzhen last week.
Radwanska, the number 1 seed, playing yet another game of classic and assured tennis, beat Li in straight sets 6-3 6-4 in a match that lasted just over one and a half hours. In the final analysis, it was Li’s serve that particularly let her down, but Radwanska had better stats in every area.
Her opponent in the final will be the unseeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova, who lost in the first round of her first tournament, but quickly made amends in Sydney to reach the final.
She took out the tournament’s 2nd seed Angelique Kerber in three hard fought sets. Coming out of the blocks quickly, she took the first set 6-2, but allowed the equally feisty German to get a break of the Slovak’s serve and take the second set 6-4, to force a decider. The tiny Slovak pulled her game together and managed to get an early break which she did not relinquish, eventually serving out the set 6-3 to complete a match that lasted almost an hour and three quarters.
