World number one Novak Djokovic got his London campaign off to a good start, beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets 7-6 6-3.

Expectations were high that two of the most charismatic stars of the ATP would produce a exciting match but, after a tight first set, Djokovic ran out easy winner.

The opener saw Tsonga vary his game well but he was unable to take any of the three break points he held. Djokovic played solidly enough and benefited from his customary supreme defensive work to reach a tie break. The Serb targeted Tsonga’s weaker backhand wing to take the breaker in relative comfort.

Tsonga gave up the first break of serve in the match at the start of the second set and was unable to subsequently put any pressure on the Djokovic serve; at one point Djokovic won 16 points in a row on his serve.

The Serb got a second break to take the match and will now play fellow winner Andy Murray on Wednesday. Tsonga will be seeking to resurrect his chances in the tournament against Tomas Berdych.

After the match Djokovic commented: ‘I’ve really been looking forward to coming back to this great arena. It was important to start well and I did well when I had to.’
