Federer tries to be too cute on a slice backhand and nets it for 30-0. Two points away from the final now, but Murray puts a backhand long to go to 30-15. After Federer does well to get a Murray serve back, he cannot do anything on the next shot as a powerful backhand is again sliced into the net. Murray has just two match points but takes the first to move into the final where he will face Novak Djokovic. Another rain delay here..roof is being closed, will be 15 minutes or so and then court needs to be dried. 4-6 4-5 – Federer quickly goes 40-0 up, the third point being taken with a nice serve and volley into the open court. When Murray rattles off another rapid return of serve to save the second of three break points, it seems like a repeat of what we’ve seen before in many of the other games. Federer soon wipes it out though as Murray this time cannot produce some magic on return and hits long. 4-6 3-5 – Murray isn’t affected by his failure to take the insurance break and carries on with his business of holding fairly comfortably. Murray again drops a game point at 40-15 but makes no mistake on the second with an emphatic ace to force Federer to serve to stay in the match. 4-6 3-4 – Murray goes up 0-30 and has the chance to kill the match off quickly. When a Federer serve is challenged, the Shanghai crowd are cheering for it to be in and they get their wish. This would set the tone for the rest of the game as Federer wins four straight points but it wasn’t easy. 4-6 2-4 – Murray falls down 0-15 but reels off 4 straight points as the pro-Fed crowd begin to go quiet. A wicked forehand going just wide at 30-15 from Federer sums up his day which just hasn’t been great, but an excellent performance from Murray has not allowed him to get any better. 4-6 2-3 – Federer goes up 40-0 but the game develops into a copy of the first game of the set as Murray brings up some astonishing returning once more. This time round Murray doesn’t need seven break points, as he takes the very first with a return of service winner down the line that looked like it was going out for some time. BREAK MURRAY 4-6 2-2 – Murray starts with a double fault but recovers well enough to 40-15 with the help of some big serving. He holds yet again to 30. While every game has been close, Murray has been on top for most of them, dropping points at 30-15 or 40-15 rather than having to chase. 4-6 2-1 – The error prone Federer is back as he gifts Murray a 0-30 lead. Federer pulls back to 30-30 but is being pressured on the forehand by Murray. Murray eventually tries to force the issue with the cross court forehand but puts it wide. His execution on that shot hasn’t been the best at times. A big serve cannot be put in play by Murray as Federer holds. 4-6 1-1 – Murray isn’t affected by his wastefulness in the last game and holds to 30 to push the pressure back to the Swiss. 4-6 1-0 – A minor delay doesn’t seem to have affected Murray as he begins where he left off, with a big return setting up a seventh break point after Federer cannot pick it up. Unfortunately though, he carries on where he left off in terms off break point conversion, with it not being a lucky seventh time for Murray. After eight deuces, Federer finally holds as he serves his third ace of the match for a 1-0 second set lead. Rain Delay 4-6 0-0 *40-40 – Three straight points and 40-0 lead for Federer looks like he may have his very first love hold of the match but Murray has other ideas. He saves two before reeling off back-to-back return of serve winners to bring up break point. Murray tries to force the issue too much and hits his forehand way too long as Federer survives. Another return of serve winner at deuce brings up break point number two but he fails to convert. A poor approach sets up a third break point as Murray passes Federer. He fails to take advantage. Three more break points come and go before it begins to rain. 4-6 – Great start for Murray as he rushes into a 30-0 lead, but Federer halves the deficit. Murray shrugs it off and serves his fourth ace of the match to bring up two set points. On the first,Federer hits a backhand long on a second serve as Murray takes a set lead. SET MURRAY 4-5 – The Federer serve is all over the place as an opening ace is followed by a fifth double fault of the match. Murray attempts the backhand down the line return on a Federer second serve but cannot get the required height. Another poor error stops Murray from getting a break point as Federer holds to 30. 3-5 – Murray is catching the double fault bug and begins with one of his own to go 0-15 down. He holds on to force Federer to serve for the set, ending the game with his first and second aces of the match. 3-4 – Federer ensures he stays in touch with a fairly comfortable hold. After the last service game, he at least manages no double faults and wins his service game to 15. 2-4 – Federer isn’t playing well at the moment and Murray needs to take advantage. At 15-15, what should be a routine forehand down the line for Federer is put well wide. At 40-30, Federer picks out a big return which Murray does well to dink back in to play. Federer approaches the net to line up the backhand, but misjudges it as it goes into the net. 2-3 – After a disappointing error sees Federer fall 0-15 down, he then outdoes himself withconsecutive double faults to go 3 break points down. Amazingly, a third double fault in a row sees Murray well and truly gifted the game. BREAK MURRAY 2-2 – After Federer couldn’t get a big first serve in play for a Murray 30-0 lead it looked like a comfortable hold but two astonishing winners from Federer pull it back to 30-30, the first punishing a shortball that the Federer forehand was more than happy to put away emphatically. Murray survives though, but has to avoid a big forehand aimed right at him which ends up going long to seal the hold. 2-1 – The first hold of the match for Federer, but he is made to work hard for it. Great defence helps Murray save a game point, after Federer can do little but hit far too long to end the rally. Federer misjudges the depth again and puts long to go break point down. The serve comes to his rescue with a big first serve setting up the forehand winner as he wrong foots Murray. Federer’s first ace of the game brings up advantage but this chance goes begging too as he nets a forehand. Murray puts too much on a service return as it goes well wide and an attempted forehand down the line is netted as Federer holds. 1-1 – Unfortunately for Murray he can’t consolidate it. Federer goes 30-0 up but is quickly pegged back to 30-30. Murray nets to bring up break point, and eventually his backhand lets him down, as he aims too close to the line and puts it wide. He challenges the call but hawkeye rules it was out. BREAK FEDERER Only 1 of 5 first serves in that service game from Federer, you cannot afford to do that on a regular occasion against great returners like Murray and he was punished for it. 0-1 – A rapid start from Murray sees him move into a 15-40 lead on the serve, bringing up break point after a venomous backhand had too much for the world No.1. Murray needs only one opportunity, injecting pace into the forehand which Federer just cannot deal with as he is broken in the very first game of the match. Federer secured himself one more week at the top of the rankings with a three set victory over fellow countryman Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round, making it 300 weeks alltogether. Despite he wasn’t at his best in the match against Stan, he managed to put on a lot better performance in today’s quarterfinal clash against Croat Marin Cilic, defeting him 6-3 6-4. Murray, who is the defending champion here in Shanghai, is yet to lose a match at this tournament. He took part on two previous occasions, capturing the trophy both times (2010 and 2011). However, the Brit has been suffering from a minor cold this week and his way into the semis wasn’t as smooth as he would have wished to. Radek Stepanek made him work hard in today’s quarterfinal match, with Murray coming back from a set down to prevail 4-6 6-2 6-3.
