World no.65 Jerzy Janowicz upset the 13th seeded Marin Cilic in the second round of the Paris Masters 2012, beating him in straight sets 7-6 (6) 6-2.

This year has been spectacular for the Polish qualifier, who worked his way up the rankings from the 222th position at the beginning of 2012.

Janowicz, who defeated German Philipp Kohlschreiber in round one, was solid on serve throughout the whole match against the Croat and didn’t face a single break point in either of the sets. Despite Cilic taking the first mini break in the tiebreak, he couldn’t capitalise on the 3-1 lead and the Polish player took a lead in the match.

Unfortunately for Cilic, he couldn’t find his rhythm and regroup in set two. As he went down a break to trail Janowicz 4-2, the Pole never looked back and grabbed his first ever victory over a top 15 player.

Janowicz will face the winner of the match between Brit Murray and Frenchman Mathieu in round three.

Elsewhere, 15th seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan eliminated Frenchman Benoit Paire to book a place in the next round, prevailing 7-6 (2) 6-2. Next up for Nishikori will be Hanescu or Simon.
