Janko Tipsarevic and Tommy Haas were amongst the winners today in Vienna, but there was little drama to shout about as five of the six matches on the day ended in straight sets.

Tipsarevic defeated Ernests Gulbis 6-3 6-4 but it was an encounter that quite easily could have been a blowout. Tipsarevic had quickly took a 5-0 lead in the first but would allow his level to drop. The Latvian avoided the bagel and broke back once to add some respectability to the score line. Tipsarevic had no trouble serving it out second time round, taking the game to love for a set lead.

From 1-1 and 30-40 down on serve, Tipsarevic would win fifteen of the next eighteen points to take a double break lead in the second set. Tipsarevic was in control for the most part but did face a slight scare as Gulbis pulled back one of the breaks immediately and then took a 30-0 lead on the Tipsarevic serve in the next game. However, Gulbis could not take advantage and it was easy for Tipsarevic from then on, eventually serving out to 15 for the set and match.

Haas became the 38th player, and the fourth currently active, (Federer, Nadal, Hewitt and the others)  to win 500 matches on the ATP Tour with a comfortable victory over Jesse Levine 6-4 6-2. Haas would need just one break in the first set, and took it early in a marathon service game which he needed five break points to eventually break through. With just six points dropped on serve in the first set, it would be comfortable for Haas who held throughout for the set lead.

Much like the first set, Haas would get an early break and would need to work just as hard. The third break point on offer was taken for a set and 1-0 lead. It would be a little less comfortable in this set with Haas needing to save break points twice. After missing the second at 2-3* down, Levine would be broken to love as Haas ensured himself two chances to serve the match out. He needed just one, closing out the match with an emphatic love hold.

Dominic Thiem could not repeat his heroics of yesterday as Australia’s Marinko Matosevic saw off Thiem in straight sets. Matosevic recovered from 4-2 deficit in the second set tie break for a 6-3 7-6 victory and will face Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarter finals. Paolo Lorenzi pulled off another surprise, defeating Vasek Pospisil 6-4 6-4, breaking the Canadian once in each set to book his quarter finals place where he faces Gilles Muller.

It was a successful day for Slovenians with both Grega Zemlja and Aljaz Bedene successful. Zemlja broke Matthew Ebden twice in each set on his way to a 7-5 6-4 victory while it was slightly more difficult from Bedene who needed serve 11 aces on his way to defeating the struggling Donald Young 7-6(4) (2)6-7 6-3. Young had opportunities in all three sets and really should have picked up the victory. He failed to serve out the first set and held a 3-1 lead in the last before losing five straight games for another defeat. Bedene faces a tricky test against second seed Janko Tipsarevic tomorrow.
