Edouard Roger-Vasselin beats top seed Dolgopolov in the second round of Moscow ATP tournament after escaping a four match points scare. Andrea Seppi and Ivo Karlovic are through to the QFs.

Probably the biggest upset of the Kremlin Cup 2012 so far as 116th-ranked Frenchman Roger-Vasselin smashed out top seed Alexandr Dolgopolov in second round. The opener could have gone either way, yet this year’s Washington title holder Ukrainian wasted two break point opportunities in the fifth game, while the underdog converted his third one for a 5-3 lead. No response from shocked Dolgopolov who saw his rival produce a love game to wrap up the set. Roger-Vasselin certainly showed he was no pushover in this match and stunned the Ukrainian with a love break in the third game of the second set, yet Dolgopolov pegged back immediately. The tie-break was right behind the corner when Dolgopolov put an extra pressure on the Frenchman’s serve and avoided the thirteenth-game stress with another break – on set a piece between the players.

Comfortable holds in the final set until 28-year-old Edouard-Vasselin was serving to force the breaker at 6-5. Some shaky moments from the Frenchman as he gifted his adversary a double match ball, but he kept his cool and turned around the crucial game. The all-deciding tie-break was not going according to the Frenchman’s plan either as he got himself into another double match ball trouble at 6-4, but saved his skin and took the match with a four points victorious run. End result: 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (6) for unseeded Roger-Vasselin who will play Ivo Karlovic in the Moscow quarters.

Karlovic took out another unseeded player Alex Jr. Bogomolov with a 7-5, 6-4 final scoreline.

Second seed Andrea Seppi conceded an early break against Dutch Igor Sijsling but leveled the terms by 4-4 in the opening set. He converted his next break ball for a 6-5 lead and went one set up one game later. The Italian picked up the tempo in set two and created a double break advantage by 5-2. Seppi saved the best for last and served out the match with a love game, beating helpless Dutchman with 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and eight minutes. Seppi is meeting Japanese Ito in the last eight.

Elsewhere, fourth seed Brazilian Thomaz Belucci ousted Flavio Cipolla of Italy in two easy sets (6-4, 6-1) and will be matched-up against Pole Janowicz sent home seventh-seeded Argentinian Berlocq with 6-3, 6-4 triumph.
