Nicolas Almagro and Miguel Angel Lopez-Jaen continue to fight it out
for most matches. They were both in Portugal
F9 as the top two seeds and it almost came to their second showdown
in as many weeks. But this week, Lopez-Jaen fell short and Almagro
went on to his second straight title. So for the moment, Almagro
holds a one match lead on Lopez-Jaen 68-67. This week in Portugal
F10, Almagro has withdrawn and Lopez-Jaen has already won his first
round match unless he withdraws before his second round match, he will
take the lead next week. Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia continues
to break up the Spanish block. After winning Spain
F10 two weeks ago, he reached the quarterfinals last week at Spain
F11 and is in 4th place with 58 matches. Yet another Spaniard,
Juan Albert Viloca, reaches the top 10. He qualified
and reached the semifinals at the Lugano
challenger and now has 55 matches. Sasa Tuksar of Croatia also had
a good week, qualifying
for Slovenia
F3 and reaching the finals. That moves him all the way up to
#9 with 54 matches.

Laurent Gabail isn't a regular on the tour. He played only 3
matches last year and 7 the year before. But he showed up for the
Turkey
#2 satellite and after qualifying,
wound up winning the title! That gives him a 2003 record of 9-1.
He has already qualified for the second
leg. Dave Lingman of USA is another example of a quick start,
he saw his first action of the year at USA
F14 on June 9, qualifying
and losing in the first round. Last week at USA
F15, he qualified
again and reached the quarterfinals. So he is momentarily in the
top 10 at #7 with a 10-2 record.
